Sens. Rubio, Nelson Ask For FEMA Increased Aid Following Irma

Senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson requesting assistance from FEMA following Hurricane Irma's stint throughout Florida.

In a letter sent to Administrator William Long, the senators state that 24 percent of Florida's wireless communication systems are inoperable. More than 7.1 million cable and/or telephone systems across three states have been impacted by Hurricane Irma.

The request is for FEMA to coordinate with federal, state and local officials to facilitate the ability of communications companies to those areas most affected.

Nelson also urged Energy Secretary Rick Perry to aid Florida's gas supply.

He requested creating a gas supply reserve after the major hurricane shut down roads and has led to limited gas supplies at stations across the state.

"I appreciate efforts taken to date by the Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to try to expedite the flow of gasoline shipments into Florida in the wake of the storm," stated the letter. "At least some of these efforts, however, appear to have been hampered by the apparent lack of adequate gasoline reserves in Florida prior to the storm."

On Monday, Rubio and Bill Nelson toured the damage in Florida via a U.S. Coast Guard plane.

"Fifteen billion dollars is only going to last us a few weeks," Nelson said, according to a report by Local 10 News. "By the middle of October, we'll have to do another emergency supplemental appropriation."

*The 15 billion refers to the recently passed Florida disaster declaration by President Donald Trump.
