A precautionary swim notice has been issued by the Florida Department of Health Lee County for all public beaches and swimming pools.

According to DOH, the notice is due to a possible increase in waterborne illness since Hurricane Ian has affected water quality.

Officials ask residents to avoid swimming in any pool unless it's properly cleaned and fully functional.

A fully functional pool has been cleared of debris, has functioning recirculation and chemical treatment equipment, life-saving equipment that is available and operational, and has clear water and properly balanced chemicals.

DOH also urges people to avoid contact with flood waters, including beaches, since they might contain sewage and waste. The water could also contain down power lines, debris, and other hazards.
