Major Coral Reef Restoration Project In The Florida Keys

A major makeover on the way for coral reefs in the Florida Keys. This massive restoration project is called "Mission Iconic Reefs" and it will be done in phases occur over the next two decades in seven reefs thanks to public and private funding. The goal is to restore nearly three million square feet of the Florida Reef Tract damaged by disease, pollution, hurricanes and other factors. Sarah Fangman with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary says the situation is dire and they must take bold action now. The first phase will increase coral cover from 2-to-15-percent over ten years, the second phase is designed to return the ecosytem to its historical coral cover of 25-percent.
