Confusion Over Stimulus Checks As Money Deposited Into Wrong Accounts

As millions of Americans are waiting for their coronavirus relief checks, some taxpayers are becoming frustrated and confused as they try to figure out when the money will arrive. Some people went to the IRS's website to check the status of their check only to find the money had been deposited into the wrong bank account.

"I was so confused. I don't know where they got that number from," Aimme Saldana told USA Today. "I lost two weeks of pay because I was sick. I was depending on that for my car payment."

In some cases, the IRS said the money was deposited and told people to check with their bank to see why the money was not showing in their account.

"Once I pressed submit, the account number that they listed didn't match any of mine. I called my bank, and there was nothing they could do. There was no connection to my account," Thomas Krapin said.

IRS spokeswoman Jodie Reynolds explained that if a check is deposited into the wrong account, it should be rejected by the bank and returned to the IRS. When that happens, she said that the agency will send out a physical check, which could take months.

Those weren't the only issues people were having. According to NBC News, some taxpayers did not receive the $500 child credit, and others were upset that their check was less than $1,200.

If you have not received your money, you can check the status of your relief check by visiting the "Get My Payment" section on IRS's website.
