"Diverging Diamond" Interchange Opens at I-75 and SR 56

There's a new traffic pattern to look out for in Pasco County.

The Florida Dept. of Transportation has opened what's known as a diverging diamond intersection in Wesley Chapel at I-75 and SR 56. Part of the design calls for drivers to temporarily drive on we normally think of as the wrong side of the road. But, officials say this is designed to reduce traffic congestion, be safer, and easier for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians to move through the area.

Th interchange opened early Sunday morning, and F-DOT spokesman John McShaffrey tells News Channel 8 "the real key is to follow the lane lines and the signs. They tell you very clearly where to go."

As many as 70 workers were making finishing touches to the roadway right up to Sunday's opening.
