Hurricane Ian left Sanibel Island looking more like a war zone than a tropical paradise.

On Wednesday, the hurricane's eyewall stalled in the area for three to four hours, said Lee County Manager Roger Desjarlais on Friday.

The Sanibel Causeway, which connects the island to the mainland, is highly damaged, with some parts being completely wiped out by the storm.

According to Desjarlais, the island is not accessible by ground vehicles. Rescues are underway by air or boat.

"It is slow going," Desjarlais said. MORE
