The story about the origin of why UFC's ring is an octagon is a pretty wild story! Royce Gracie a BJJ expert, who helped transform and make the sport what it is today, lobbied for it. He wanted the sport to go to the next level, so he hired Hollywood to help come up with the perfect fighting arena to this exciting new (to the U.S.) sport. He hired a screenwriter and they came up with a bunch of ideas, including the idea of electrocuting the cage! They settled on the octagon and it is a wild story and you can read all about it here
