Pickup trucks are about image, as many owners “rarely or never” haul anything, they're simply attracted to the way it makes them look
So it turns out that many truck drivers just like the way pickup trucks make them look and feel, rather than using them for their actual intended purposes. If you look at the history of the pickup truck in America and realize that a third of pickup owners "rarely or never" haul anything with them, says a lot. We love our trucks, there is NO doubt about that...in fact, the Ford F-150 has been the biggest-selling vehicle in the country for the past 40 years and in that time trucks have become bigger, bulkier, more high-tech and more luxurious than trucks of the past. When trucks started becoming less of a work vehicle and more of a "lifestyle vehicle", the cabs started growing and the beds started shrinking, when it used to be the other way around. The first-generation of F-150 had 36% cab, 64% bed, but now it's 67% cab, 33% bed. The bigger the truck, the more it is about the consumers' self-image. Personality and imagery are everything when it comes to choosing a truck now, versus how it used to be, when it was based on how well it performed your work functions. The words owners associate with these trucks the most are "rugged" and "powerful". For some of these dudes in trucks there are two more words at LEAST that I can think of to describe them, but I won't get into that right now. More here
